Driving business performance - The value of a mentoring and coaching culture

I recently had the pleasure of facilitating feedback from a team of Managers who just completed a year of mentoring from their CEO, Senior Managers and industry specialists.   It was an extraordinary insight into the benefits derived by individuals in their journey of personal growth as well as the significant positive impact, directly to the business.

Management meeting

Interestingly, when asked if they would recommend the experience to others, their response was a resounding ‘Yes’!  For those that know the ‘net promoter’ metric, participants rated the mentoring program +98 out of a possible 100. (Scale 0 – 10)  Sensational!

The company in question is highly regarded as a ‘learning organisation’, where process improvement is the norm and past performance is regularly challenged.  As part of the mentoring debrief process, I asked the group to indicate why they felt the mentoring year was such a success.  The following highlights some of their reasons:

-          The direct involvement and commitment of the CEO.

-          The support and participation of the Senior Leadership team.

-          A process that tailored the mentoring to individual needs.

-          A commitment and display of high levels of ‘trust’.

-          The ability to implement learning on a practical  day to day basis.

-          A formal process with structure that allowed flexibility.

-          Developing a Mentee network to share experiences.

-          Topic areas focused on personal goals, well beyond daily roles and responsibilities.

-          Leveraging internal business networks to build relationships.

It is no surprise that this group of talented people emerged from the process with greater confidence and a sense of ownership in the their own and the company’s future.  They love what they do and on a performance basis, they are ahead of budget.

As a Leader or Manager, could 2012 be the year you begin a mentoring and coaching program within your company.

In fact, a Christmas present to yourself that keeps on giving!  You will see positive results on your bottom line.

Enjoy the festive season ... wishing you all safe and happy holidays.
