What is the value Champions and Winners play in your everyday lives?

How can you use Nadal and Djokovic to motivate business performance ?

The epic encounter at this year’s Australian Tennis Open between Nadal and Djokovic brings to life the value Champions play in our everyday lives.

We all relate to and connect with winning people and winning teams.  Whether it’s on the national  or international stage.

It makes us feel good ... somehow in our psychi we align with this sense of accomplishment ... as if it were our own.

In our minds, we become capable of anything ... even the impossible.   Never give up!  Losing is not an option!

Steve Jobs used this technique of ‘distorted reality’ to help his teams achieve.

Perhaps the most telling signs that people are positively impacted by champions (either teams or individuals) is to observe people’s behaviour during discussions about the performance of their champion teams.

If people talk about winners notice how:

  • -          their eyes light up,
  • -          chests puff out,
  • -          voice volume increases,
  • -          speech speeds up
  • -          enthusiasm and energy lifts

We also become more colourful in our descriptions about performance.

So how can Managers and Leaders use this information to achieve improved performance in business?

Here are a few techniques you can explore ....

  • -          Encourage discussion about stellar performance
  • -          Ask team members who their sporting or other hero’s are
  • -          Identify ‘champion’ characteristics
  • -          Ask people to nominate ‘everyday champions’
  • -          Support ideas with visuals of champions

The key is now to use this energy at the start of monthly meetings and challenging projects.

In fact, a great idea is to use ‘champion performance’ to help re-energise people into the start of the year:

  • -          Winning new business
  • -          Launching new products
  • -          Entering new markets
  • -          Achieving business goals and targets

Observe the impact and effect on yourself and your team!

I look forward to bringing you many other ideas and motivating concepts throughout the year.

Good managing and warm regards
